| Homemade iced coffee with cold foam — under £1.50 a cup |
I used to spend a stupid amount of money on iced coffee.
Not because I needed it every single day, but because the moment I stepped out of the house, it just… happened. One day I actually counted it. Five café drinks a week was easily £30–£40.For something I could technically make myself.
So I tried the obvious things.Instant coffee. Regular iced coffee at home. Protein shakes.Nothing really stuck. Either it tasted bad, looked ugly, or I got bored of it after two days.
Then I built a simple system.
The system I use now
Instead of making coffee from scratch every morning, I do one thing on Saturday night:
I brew a big batch of cold brew concentrate.
That one jar lasts me the whole week. In the morning, I just pour it over ice, add milk, and top it with cold foam. The whole thing takes less than 5 minutes.
The difference is the foam.
A basic cold foam (just cream + milk + a tiny bit of sweetener) already makes the drink look like something from a café. When I want more protein, I use a vanilla protein version of the same foam. It adds 12–18g of protein without turning the drink into a chalky shake.
What it actually costs me
Here’s the rough math I calculated for myself (UK prices):
- Café iced latte: £4.50 – £6.50
- My version at home: £0.80 – £1.50
If I make 5 drinks a week, I’m saving around £20–£25. Over a month, that’s close to £100. Not life-changing money, but it’s money I was literally throwing away on something I can make better at home.
The part that surprised me
The biggest problem wasn’t the recipe. It was consistency.
Most people (including me) try one recipe, get bored, and go back to buying coffee. What worked was having a weekly base (the cold brew) + a few foam options I could rotate. That way I wasn’t making the exact same drink every day.
I put the full system, all 20 recipes, the weekly shopping list, and the common mistakes into a short guide called The Protein Home Café. It’s the exact method I use now.
If you want the recipes and the step-by-step system, you can get it here:
Quick version if you want to try it today
Brew cold brew concentrate overnight (coarse coffee + cold water, 16–18 hours in the fridge).
In the morning: ice + cold brew + milk.
Froth 2 tbsp cold cream + 1 tbsp milk + a little vanilla for the foam.
Pour the foam on top. Don’t stir if you want it to look good.
That’s it.
I’m not saying you’ll never buy coffee again. But once you have a system that actually tastes good and takes almost no time, you stop needing the café as much.
